Case Details
Mzia Amaghlobeli is the founder and director of the independent media outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti. On January 11, 2025, she placed a sticker reading "Georgia is on strike" on the wall of an auxiliary building near the entrance of the Batumi Police Department.
She was initially detained under administrative charges, released, and then re-arrested under criminal charges after slapping Batumi Police Chief Irakli Dgebuadze. The prosecution accused her of "assaulting a police officer."
While in detention, Amaghlobeli went on a 38-day hunger strike. On the 24th day, she was transferred to a clinic and returned to prison only after ending her strike. Her health deteriorated severely during her detention.
